Natural gas production up 10 percent in Q2

August 31, 2018

Pennsylvania's natural gas production rose by 10 percent in the second quarter, with Washington and Greene counties once again among the state's most prolific.

Natural gas production was 1.4 trillion cubic feet in the second quarter and 2.9 trillion cubic feet in the first half of 2018, according to data released Friday by the Independent Fiscal Office based on Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection data. That's up 10 percent compared to the second quarter of 2017 and the first half of last year.

IFO said all of the production growth came from wells that were spud - starting to be drilled - in either 2016 or 2017. There were 10,333 horizontal natural gas wells in Pennsylvania in 2018, up 8.6 percent from 9,513 in 2017. The number of horizontal wells spud in the second quarter, 202, was down slightly from the 218 in the second quarter of 2017.
