Local Energy Issues
Pennsylvania has been blessed with oil and natural gas resources since the first oil well was drilled in 1859. Now, the Keystone State is seeing a new economic boom in natural gas development with the Marcellus Shale. However, with the boom comes local challenges to ensure that development takes place in a manner that protects the citizens and environment our beautiful state.
Pennsylvania has been facing these challenges, head-on, however, through ensuring that existing regulations are adhered to by Marcellus Shale drillers; by providing the resources required to manage compliance; and by working with the individual communities to keep citizens apprised of their rights as land is developed.
The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has upgraded its site with information about the Marcellus Shale. Local organizations and websites are also being launched to assist with employment and job training; communications; and economic development.
Dozens of radio stations have created programming dedicated to Marcellus news. A brand new newspaper, The Drill’N Man, was started up by James Asbury out of Williamsport catering to the roughnecks in the gas fields.
Policies will continue to be debated as the Marcellus Shale continues to be developed, and the Keystone Energy Forum will keep readers apprised of pending discussions. The goal of this site is to ensure that lawmakers are creating policies that promote our economic and energy security.
